Mary is a vampire hunter in The Eminence in Shadow. Her main goal in life is to defeat the Blood Queen Elisabeth, a legendary vampire progenitor responsible for the creation of many bloodthirsty monsters.
Mary has dedicated her life to this goal, but she hides a dark secret.
Is Mary a Vampire?
While Mary is a legendary vampire hunter, she is, in fact, a member of the species she's fighting to eradicate.
Many years ago, she used to serve the Blood Queen Elisabeth, the vampire queen she is now looking to defeat. She was so loyal that she eventually became Elisabeth's second in command.
However, a tragedy ensued that caused her mistress to go on a violent rampage.
While Mary was able to stop Elisabeth at the time, the incident later returned to haunt her.
In Season 2, The Eminence in Shadow moved away from its high fantasy focus into a more gothic adventure featuring a vampire infection, so we expect Mary to play a prominent role.
How Old Is Mary?
Mary's exact age is not known. She is probably over 1000 years old in The Eminence in Shadow Season 2.
Being a vampire, she is practically immortal, although she could potentially be destroyed in specific circumstances such as in a conflict with another vampire or vampire hunter.
What Are Mary's Powers and Abilities?
Mary's powers and abilities are what you might normally expect from a vampire, a vampire hunter, or both.
She possesses the increased agility and dexterity associated with an immortal vampire, as well as enhanced night vision.
During battles, she can regenerate very fast if she sustains any wounds. Being a hunter as well as a vampire, she's an expert swordswoman.
In the light novel, she uses a black cross-sword. Crosses are traditionally considered to be symbols that guard against vampires.
As for the anime, she wields a blood sword. Future episodes might reveal more about its uses.
Mary's powers are enhanced during the red moon, a one-in-a-lifetime event.
Who Is Mary's Voice Actor in The Eminence in Shadow?
Mary is voiced by Ai Kakuma. The voice actor has appeared in many other anime, including in the role of Fran in the isekai Reincarnated as a Sword.
She has also recently voiced Runa Sasaki in the romance series Loving Yamada at Lv999!
