Who Does Alina End Up With in Shadow and Bone?

A lot happened in the final episode of Shadow and Bone Season 2. But among the many unexpected twists and turns, fans are eager to know who Alina (Jessie Mei Li) ends up with in the series.

Alina's romantic future remains unknown, especially since fans have been rooting for different partners for her. Many want Alina and Mal (Archie Renaux) to end up together, but will it still happen after the Shadow and Bone Season 2 events?

The Romantic Partners Fans Have Been Rooting for Alina

Aside from her best friend Mal, some viewers also want General Kirigan, aka the Darkling (Ben Barnes), to be with Alina.

Shadow and Bone Season 2 then introduced Nikolai (Patrick Gibson), complicating things more as he wanted to marry Alina.

However, the Netflix series has made a lot of changes from its source material, Leigh Bardugo's Grisha book trilogy.

Though book readers already know Alina's romantic fate, things may change in the TV series.

Alina Ends Up with Mal in the Book

The book and the TV series differ when Alina has to kill Mal to use him as an amplifier.

In the book, these two end up together after Alina kills the Darkling, though nearly sacrificing Mal in the process. Many of the Ravka believe they're dead.

They change their names, get married, go into hiding, reopen the Keramzin orphanage, and get the happily ever after they dream of.

But the same thing can't be said on the show.

Will Alina and Mal End Up Together in Shadow and Bone TV Series?

At the Shadow and Bone Season 2 finale, Alina kissed General Kirigan only to find out that he was the Darkling behind the creation of the Fold.

Alina killed him, so there was no chance for these two to be together. So, will this let Alina and Mal end up with one another?

Alina agreed to marry Nikolai, the heir to the Ravka throne, thinking the monarchy needed help and protection.

Mal, alternatively, decided to become a pirate.

Alina once said she didn't know where their paths would lead. But Mal stated that if his path led him back to her, they would know they were meant for each other.

Will Alina and Mal Still Be With Each Other in the Future Seasons of Shadow and Bone?

In an interview with Town & Country, Gibson revealed Mal had to go to find out who he really was before returning to Alina.

"Mal, at that point, feels like he's kind of been living for Alina for the longest time, and that's what he wanted to do," he explained.

"But after it's all over, and they've taken down the Fold, he's like, 'who am I now? Can I hang around here?'" he continued. "He has to go off and find out who he is without her in order to maybe come back and be together."

Showrunner Eric Heisserer also weighed in on the possibility of Alina and Mal being together.

"One of the things that my writers love so much about the Mal and Alina relationship is how they learned to be honest with each other, how they learned to be transparent about their hopes and fears," he told Mashable.

"We felt that what was giving the relationship the most respect and the most love for each other was for Mal to have time to figure out who he is and for Alina to see if this path that she's on is still the direction she wants to go," he added.
