Tomo-chan Is a Girl! is based on a four-panel manga series that's written and illustrated by Fumita Yanagida. The series was originally published on Twitter, but it has since come a long way.

Tomo-chan Is a Girl! follows Tomo Aizawa, a high-school girl who has fallen in love with her childhood friend, Junichirou Kubota, with whom she's recently been reunited.

However, Jun is oblivious to Tomo's affection and sees her as just "one of the guys," initially not even realizing that she's a girl.

The anime and manga, known as Tomo-chan wa Onnanoko! in Japanese, center around Tomo's comedic attempts to escape the friend zone and make Junichirou aware of her feelings.

What makes Tomo-chan Is a Girl! extremely interesting despite its simple premise, is that it discusses and averts harmful stereotypes.

It becomes clear early on that there is absolutely nothing wrong with Tomo's non-traditionally feminine appearance.

Preconceived notions about gender and romance are the only things that keep Tomo and Jun from ending up together.

Moreover, Tomo defies the trope that wants young women who don't conform to rigid gender roles to have a "not like other girls" mentality.

Throughout the series, she forms friendships with other female characters, such as Misuzu -- a cool character in her own right -- and Carol, an exchange student who is Tomo's opposite in every possible way.

At 13 episodes, Tomo-chan Is a Girl!'s adaptation covers the entire manga. If you want to read more, we recommend starting the manga from the beginning.

The anime culminates in Tomo's confession after Jun defeats her dad in martial arts.

After all the denial and miscommunication, Jun finally responds positively to Tomo's feelings for him and reveals that he shares them, so the two start a relationship.

The manga's format is different from the anime's. Being a four-panel work, each manga chapter is just a page long and reads much faster.

While most of the anime's scenarios were taken out of manga panels, there was an effort to make each anime episode cohesive in terms of themes and storyline.

As such, we would expect the manga to feel like a different experience, but it's definitely worth it if you loved the characters.

Starting at the beginning is recommended, as it wouldn't make much sense to browse through hundreds of panels for a single instance.

But of course, choosing a random panel to check out might have its charms.
