What The Star Wars: The Force Awakens Opening Would Have Looked Like If It Went With JJ Abrams' Crazy Early Ideas

The opening of Star Wars: The Force Awakens wasa big deal because it was the first ever new footage that fans get to see after more than three decades. It ushered fans old and new into a brand new adventure. Naturally, JJ Abrams had a lot of ideas for this. Those who are wondering what the scrapped concepts would have looked like on screen, leave that to talented Star Wars fan Tim Gray, who made animated versions of the original opening scene ideas for the film.

The first one sees a Star Destroyer coming into view. While it looks menacing at first glance, we see a massive hole on its front section that rendered it unusable. Two smaller ships escort it to its final resting place, the desert planet Jakku, where it will be scavenged for parts by no other than the new protagonist, Rey.

Many Star Wars fans not only gushed about Gray's impressive skills, but also the actual concept. Majority of the people who watched it believe that this may have been a better way to start The Force Awakens as it harks back to the original trilogy, but it also teases something fresh and exciting. After all, the film, while generally reviewed positively, was deemed as a copy of A New Hope. Check it out below.

Gray also created a second video that captures another opening scene idea from Abrams. This one is a bit crazier and morbid. It sees Luke's severed hand, still holding the lightsaber, floating away into space before finding its way to Jakku.

It was another superb rendition from the YouTuber, but it didn't make a lot of sense. As fans know, it was in Cloud City in Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back where the confrontation that led to Luke's hand getting severed took place. It would have been very unlikely for it to end up there unless someone reckless found it. Watch the video below.

What this opening scene idea reveals though is that Abrams may have intended for Rey's connection to Luke and Anakin's lighsaber closer. In the film, the weapon ended up in Maz Kanata's possession, which by the way wasn't even explained in Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Would you have preferred to see either of these opening scenes in Star Wars: The Force Awakens instead?
