It's official: murder mysteries are the hottest thing these days. And to prove it, Netflix has an upcoming whodunnit series by Shonda Rhimes.

Rhimes's Shondaland production company has confirmed that it will be releasing a murder mystery with an all-star cast on Netflix. Some of Rhimes' biggest TV shows include Grey's Anatomy, How to Get Away with Murder, Bridgerton, and Scandal.

Hopefully, this upcoming show lives up to its expectations, especially since it is a Shondaland production. Here's what we know about The Residence.

The Residence was only announced recently so there's no word yet on when it will be released. The good news is, however, that it is already in production.

If there are no hiccups, we could expect the show to come out on Netflix later this year or in early 2024.

The show is billed as an eight-part series. We don't know yet if the episodes will be released on the same day.

Rhimes' previous Netflix mini-series, Inventing Anna, was inspired by real events. Her upcoming murder mystery, however, was based on a 2015 bestseller book entitled The Residence: Inside the Private World of the White House, which was written by Kate Anderson Brower.

Although the book is non-fiction, the TV show will not be based on real events. It will be set in the White House and centering on the staff that is part of the 132-room property.

But as far as the story goes, that's all that is real. The show promises to bring "a screwball whodunnit set in the upstairs, downstairs, and backstairs of the White House, among the eclectic staff of the world's most famous mansion."

Considering the White House has 132 rooms, it means that there's a vast number of suspects that could be a murderer in The Residence. It has been detailed that there will be 157 suspects.

It is up to Detective Cordelia Cupp (played by Uzo Aduba) to figure out who the murderer is amidst a state dinner.
