K-dramas are having a good year on Netflix right now. One of the shows that the streaming platform is highlighting for 2023 is Mask Girl. But what is Mask Girl about?

Since the show has not yet been released on Netflix, there's very little information available on its story. But if you're excited to watch this promising K-drama, here's a look into the show.

Lately, there's been a slew of webtoons getting a live-action adaptation on Netflix. The list includes Sweet Home, Hellbound, All of Us Are Dead, Tomorrow, and many more.

Mask Girl adds to the list of Korean webtoons that have been adapted for the screen. The show is based on the popular webtoon with the same title. The webtoon was created by Mae-mi and was published between 2015 and 2018.

The synopsis of the webtoon reads:

"As a child, I wanted to be a star. Growing up, I found out that God gave me a perfect body. But I forgot to give you a beautiful face too! Two sides of life began. Daytime as a salaryman, late night as BJ Mask Girl, a famous net idol. this top secret Nobody knows!"

There are a total of 23 episodes in the webtoon series so we don't know if the live-action adaptation will stick with this same number of episodes.

If ever, Netflix could splice the story into several seasons, depending on how well the show gets accepted by the public.

Considering the webtoon is listed for readers above 18 years of age, it's possible that the K-drama series could follow the same theme.

When Netflix unveiled its 2023 slate of K-dramas, it included this synopsis for Mask Girl:

“Mask Girl is a story about Kim Mo-mi, an ordinary office worker by day who is insecure about her appearance and a live-streamer by night who covers up her face with a mask, as she becomes embroiled in an unforeseen incident and undergoes a dramatic turn of events.
"The original webtoon of the same title that the series is based on was beloved by many readers for its unpredictable twists, biting messages about lookism, and the effortless cross between thriller and black comedy.”

Mask Girl is a thriller that follows the story of Kim Mo-mi (played by Go Hyun-jung). She has always longed to be a star but doesn't have the looks to make it big.

Even though Mo-mi can dance and sing, her lack of star appeal dampens her hopes to be one.

Instead of following her dreams, Mo-mi settles as a regular office worker. At night, however, she takes on a hidden identity known only as Mask Girl to the online community.

Through this alter-ego, Mo-mi is able to showcase her talent via a webcast as she hides behind her collection of wigs, skimpy outfits, and a mask.

She secretly has a crush on her boss, Team Leader Park (played by Choi Daniel). Meanwhile, her colleague, Joo Oh-nam (played by Ahn Jae-hong), has long been her secret admirer. Oh-nam is also an avid fan of Mask Girl.

Right now, that's pretty much all we know about the show. There appears to be a twist in the story, however, as the character of Mo-mi is played by two other actors: Nana and Lee Han-byul.

In an interview with Variety, director and writer Kim Yong-hoon explained that there are three versions of the character.

Yong-hoon described these three versions as "injured, marginalized individuals."

The show will be available to watch on Netflix starting Friday, August 18th. You can check out the latest trailer here:
