What Happened to the Ghoul's Nose in Fallout?

Based on the iconic post-apocalyptic games franchise, Prime Video's Fallout series follows Lucy (played by Ella Purnell) leaving the Vault for the first time, only to discover just how much the world has changed over the past 200 years.

One of these changes includes meeting the noseless Ghoul (played by Goggins). But how did the Ghoul lose his nose in the first place? Why is it missing?

In the original Fallout games, ghouls are described as a type of "mutated humans or animals" – basically, necrotic post-humans wandering the Capital Wasteland.

Despite their zombie-like appearance, their flesh is not actually rotten. It somehow got preserved by the ungodly amounts of radiation ghouls were exposed to, while still managing to slough off their skin.

However, one of the most noticeable side-effects of prolonged radiation poisoning is tissue damage, which often results in loss of nose and ears. Hence what happened to the Ghoul's nose. But there's more.

While some of these creatures end up falling deep into madness following their transformation, others manage to keep their humanity – kind of. And one of them happens to be Walton Goggins' Ghoul.

Fallout Star Explains How They Removed The Ghoul's Nose in the First Place

Goggins explained in a recent interview how the production team even made the noseless Ghoul possible.

According to Goggins, there was a "piece [...] designed so it went up to your nose," in which "they just put white dots, just tracking dots."

In a different interview, he added, "I didn't even know how I could talk with these things in my mouth."

Apparently, the nose piece was not all – he also has had a piece on his bottom lip and another on his top lip, which meant he "couldn't keep any moisture in his mouth." However, despite this experience, he admitted, "I had a great time. I would do it again."
