When Aaron Quinn first reported his girlfriend, Denise Huskins, missing, his story seemed so unbelievable that police accused him of fabricating the story. The 2015 kidnapping was likened to Gillian Flynn's bestselling novel, Gone Girl

The two had a traumatic event in 2015 that changed their lives forever. In the middle of the night, the couple awakened to armed intruders wearing scuba suits. The couple were then tied up using zip ties and put in a closet. They were then drugged and blindfolded.

The intruders claimed they were planned of a well-organized group who were involved in collecting financial debt. They kidnapped Huskins and demanded a ransom from Quinn. The assailant drugged and raped Huskins in a remote location.

Meanwhile, Quinn approached the Vallejo police and asked for assistance. Instead of believing him, they accused him of being the primary suspect behind Huskins' presumed murder.

Things changed when Huskins was released near her mother's home a couple of days later. The police, however, continued to doubt the couple.

After a few weeks, a similar incident took place in Dublin, California. While the perpetrator was able to escape, he left behind his cell phone, which led the police to capture Matthew Muller, a Harvard-trained attorney and former Marine.

When Muller's crime had been discovered, Huskins and Quinn took legal action against the Vallejo police. They sued the City of Vallejo for defamation. A report regarding the lawsuit shared that the Vallejo Police Department said "police statements and actions created a 'destructive nationwide media frenzy ... and rubbed salt in the plaintiff's fresh wounds.'"

They were awarded a $2.5 million settlement in 2018. They also got married this same year.

Years later, the two wrote a book entitled Victim F: From Crime Victims to Suspects to Survivors. The book was released on June 8, 2021. They have also turned to social media to be an advocate for other crime victims.

The couple's story was adapted into a docuseries by Netflix entitled American Nightmare. The three-part film was released on January 17, 2024.
