Matakara and Arajin Are Childhood Friends Who Aim to Become Honkibito in Bucchigiri
Many people don’t believe in the legend of the Honkibito, or the Honki people, but Arajin and Matakara practiced every day in the past to become one before their friendship turned sour and things began to change.
Matakara and Arajin’s usual hangout place is by the Honki Shrine, where they train their skills every day.
It’s Arajin who influenced Matakara to become stronger by encouraging him to become a Honki person despite his short stature and weak demeanor.
Arajin used to be fun and hopeful, which inspired Matakara a lot. Matakara thinks that Arajin is kind, brave, cool, and strong enough to become a true Honki person even to this day, despite the latter’s cold and aloof behavior.
They always stayed together, being partners in elementary school and having so much fun as if they had their own little world where they could be who they wanted to be.
At some point, Arajin even gave Matakara a best friend's stone, which signifies their friendship. Matakara holds onto it, thinking that his friendship with Arajin will go back to what it used to be.
Matakara is hopeful that someday, Arajin will continue training to become Honki people with him again.

What Happened Between Matakara and Arajin in Bucchigiri?
It’s obvious that something happened between Matakara and Arajin in Bucchigiri.
While Matakara acts friendly with Arajin, the latter doesn’t want to do anything with the former. Arajin even flat-out told Akutaro Shindo of the NG Boys that he’s not friends with Matakara!
So, what actually happened between the two of them that led to their falling out?
Surprisingly, Arajin doesn’t want to be reminded of the past when he left Matakara in the hands of the bullies. The bullies beat Matakara while Arajin pathetically watched behind the tree like a stranger.
Arajin acted strong and brave in front of Matakara, but he was a scared boy who left his friend behind.
This memory haunts Arajin, whose stomach gets upset every time Matakara talks about training together to become Honkibito again.
Matakara didn’t do anything wrong, unlike the initial belief that he did something to upset Arajin. It was the other way around, as Matakara has always been a good friend to Arajin.
