WB Chief on Difference Between DCEU and Marvel Method

Aquaman was a huge hit at the box office last year, but this is still the beginning for the DCEU. Since Justice League, WB has done a complete overhaul with their approach to the DC movies, and WB Group Chairman Toby Emmerich elaborates on the difference between the DCEU's method to the MCU's.

According to Cinema Blend, Emmerich explained:

"We all feel like we've turned a corner now. We're playing by the DC playbook, which is very different than the Marvel playbook. We are far less focused on a shared universe. We take it one movie at a time. Each movie is its own equation and own creative entity. If you had to say one thing about us, it's that it always has to be about the directors."

The DCEU had admittedly messed up when it tried to rush its superhero team-up film with Justice League, but they have been doing great with solo ventures like Wonder Woman and Aquaman. There's also been a lot of talk of directors' visions getting bogged down by studio heads, so it's good that they're making an emphasis on respecting the creatives.

As for the Marvel side of things, the franchise has been a huge success, but there has been talk about directors' not getting respected before. Edgar Wright (Baby Driver) had famously quit Ant-Man after years of development, and James Gunn had just recently been fired from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Personally, I would like to see both franchises at the top of their game seeing as I'm a fan of these comic book films. I just hope there's a good balance between the studio and creatives because we all want directors to achieve their vision, but it's still the job of the studio to make sure the films are the best they can be for everyone.

Next DCEU movie is Shazam! which comes out April 5.
