A new trailer for an unexpected crossover got a lot of buzz online, and it is a Godzilla vs. Evangelion collaboration for pachinko in Japan.

Specifically, the trailer featured these two iconic franchises as they clash, and it went viral not only because it was released in a surprising fashion, but also because of how impressive the video is.

After all, it’s not every day that you see EVA Unit-01 clash with the king of monsters.

More info on the collab was also shared on the EVA Info website.

What Is the Godzilla x EVA Collaboration?

The trailer’s highlight is no doubt the fight between the iconic EVA mecha and Godzilla, though they aren’t the only stars in this video.

It also featured other characters from both franchises, including the fearsome King Ghidorah, as well as Evangelion characters like Shinji Ikari and Rei Ayanami.

In the end, Godzilla blasts EVA Unit-01 with its signature Atomic Breath attack, but instead of destroying the EVA unit, it suddenly transforms into a Godzilla-like being.

Given the impressive visuals of the trailer, many fans online thought that it was a great video, with many hoping that an actual game will be released featuring both franchises.

While it looks like an ad for a game, it’s actually for a pachinko game. In case you’re unfamiliar, pachinko refers to an arcade game in Japan that’s comparable to slot machines.

While technically not gambling as it is illegal in Japan, pachinko machines reward players with tokens that can be exchanged for money in another shop.

Pachinko is a big industry in Japan, so it’s no surprise to see big IPs get used for pachinko arcade machines.

Aside from Evangelion, there have been many anime-themed pachinko in Japan, including Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Fist of the North Star, and more.

Aside from being impressed by the trailer, some fans noticed that the subtitles for the trailer imply that Evangelion takes place in the same universe as Shin Godzilla.

This connection may not seem readily apparent, but it does make sense.

After all, Evangelion creator Hideaki Anno is also the director of the 2016 Shin Godzilla movie.

In case you’re unfamiliar, Anno’s Godzilla movie is the first in a series of tokusatsu remakes.

It was followed by Shin Ultraman, which was released this year, with another movie entitled Shin Kamen Rider scheduled for 2023.
