Big news for Cowboy Bebop fans! Series creator Shinichiro Watanabe is developing a new anime with studio MAPPA titled Lazarus, and it will be released on Adult Swim’s Toonami block.

This exciting new anime from the legendary director was announced in a report by Variety which also revealed more details about the show’s creative team which includes the renowned director of John Wick.

But perhaps the highlight of the new anime is the fact that it sees Watanabe teaming up with MAPPA once again, and this time for a thrilling sci-fi series.

Variety and Warner Bros. Discovery shared the initial details of the upcoming Lazarus anime, including the news that it will be animated by MAPPA, the notable studio behind hits such as Jujutsu Kaisen and Chainsaw Man.

While this is a significant collaboration, this isn’t the first time that Watanabe directed an anime at MAPPA.

After all, Watanabe also helmed Kids on the Slope, MAPPA’s first TV anime project which aired in 2012.

Following this, Watanabe also teamed up with MAPPA for Terror in Resonance, but since then, Watanabe has not directed an anime made by the studio.

As for their new project, Lazarus is an anime that’s set in 2052, an era of peace thanks to the development of a miracle cure-all drug named Hapuna, which was developed by Dr. Skinner.

After the drug is released, Dr. Skinner mysteriously disappears. He then returns three years after the drug was introduced and announces that everyone who has taken Hapuna will die after three years.

In response, a special task force called Lazarus is gathered to find Skinner and develop a vaccine to save the world.

Aside from its interesting sci-fi premise, the Lazarus anime is also a show that anime fans should watch out for, especially as it will feature action sequences designed by Chad Stahelski, the director of the John Wick movies.

As with MAPPA, this isn’t the first time that Watanabe has worked with a notable director from Hollywood.

A few years ago, he was tapped by Denis Villeneuve to make an anime short for Blade Runner 2049.

On top of Stahelski’s involvement, it was also announced that the Lazarus anime will feature music by Kamasi Washington, Floating Points, and Bonobo.

Currently, there’s no word yet on a release date for the Lazarus anime, though more details will be revealed at San Diego Comic-Con this weekend.
