What Is The Boy and the Heron About?

The Boy and the Heron is a fantasy anime movie about a young Japanese boy named Mahito Maki.

The movie is set around the Pacific War in 1944. Mahito is devastated when his mother dies in a Tokyo air raid.

Meanwhile, Shoichi Maki, Mahito’s father, remarries Natsuko, his late wife’s younger sister.

The family relocates to Natsuko’s countryside estate, but Mahito faces challenges in this unfamiliar landscape.

He continues to cope with grief and then one day, his life takes a mysterious turn when he discovers a book titled How Do You Live? in an empty house.

The story unfolds as he encounters a legendary Western-style house in a garden, built by his great-uncle.

Later, a grey heron, who speaks like a human, assures Mahito that his mother is alive and waiting for him, leading him into the house.

The Boy and the Heron is a semi-autobiographical fantasy exploring themes of life, creation, and death, paying homage to friendship.

Miyazaki (My Neighbor Totoro) is credited for the original story, direction, screenplay, and storyboard of The Boy and the Heron.

Joe Hisaishi (Spirited Away) has been roped in to compose the music for this adventure fantasy anime movie. Meanwhile, Takeshi Honda (The God of High School) is in charge of character design and art direction.
