Venom: Director Ruben Fleischer Confirms The Film Sets Up Sequels

The Venom movie coming from Sony this October is something fans aren't sure how to feel about. On one hand, the character looks great and it has an all-star cast with Tom Hardy as Eddie Brock, Woody Harrelson, and so much more. However, the fact that Sony is planning to make this the start of a Spider-Man supporting character-verse has many raising an eyebrow.

Ruben Fleischer, the film's director, has confirmed to ComicBook.com that this movie will lay the groundwork for future sequels, which might raise even more eyebrows. With the current superhero landscape, this was expected but it would be nice if the film were self-contained.

"We've definitely laid some groundwork for different directions that the franchise could go but obviously it all hinges on people's excitement about this film. I hope people will stay and see what seeds have been planted."

Admittedly, laying the groundwork for more sequels isn't an inherently bad thing if done well; everyone loved Nick Fury appearing at the end of Iron Man after all. Plus, the statement that Fleischer says implies something similar, so a post-credit sequence isn't going to hurt. Here is hoping that it's done well since us comic book fans love little stingers like this.

While teasing a future appearance from Carnage seems like the route this post-credits scene will do, it would also be nice if Spider-Man were teased. Granted, Kevin Feige says that this won't be in the MCU but things can change.

Venom will hit theaters on October 5.
