Venom Director Explains How The Movie Doesn’t Need Spider-Man

Marvel fans were pretty surprised when Sony announced that it was working on a Venom movie with Tom Holland's Spider-Man. Sure the symbiote is pretty popular on his own, and sure Holland's Peter Parker is already part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but Eddie Brock's origin story as Venom has everything to do with Spidey.

While fans still feel like Venom should have a little Spider-Man cameo in it, the film's director Ruben Fleischer thinks he can give a good reason why the web-slinger isn't necessary for the movie.

Speaking in an interview with IGN, Fleisher tried to explain why he thinks that Venom could go on without a single appearance from Spider-Man, pinning everything on the popularity of Venom and on the popularity of Eddie Brock's actor, Tom Hardy.

"There is more than enough Venom to go around. Venom is a really huge character, and Hardy is an amazing actor, so there is plenty to mine just from Tom's performance, the character and the world he inhabits," the director explained.

While it seems like Fleisher really is banking on Venom's reputation, the director also did give a coy "who's to say whether it's with or without Spider-Man," when asked about the web-slinger's presence in his film. Sure Eddie Brock might be popular too, but honestly, it's really hard to imagine a Venom movie without Spider-Man. The origin of Venom is basically tied to the web-slinger.
