Crunchyroll’s popularity has skyrocketed over the last five years thanks to just how much anime is released on the platform each season. However, behind the mountain of new shows, there are some underrated anime gems on Crunchyroll that fans need to discover.

Whether something is ‘underrated’ or not is largely subjective. However, we’ve tried to pick acclaimed anime that didn’t hit the same heights of popularity as other shows in the seasons they aired.

So, next time you’re scrolling through this season’s dozen new isekai anime desperate for something good to watch, why not check out one of these hidden gems?

  1. Cells at Work

While it might seem a bit childish on the outside, Cells at Work is a wonderfully charming workplace anime full of laughs. The fact that you can learn about our biology while watching is just a bonus!

Set inside the human body, the story follows various anthropomorphised cells as they deliver oxygen, fight bacteria, and do everything else that keeps us working every second of the day!

A new red blood cell is ready to fulfil her important job. On her travels, she’s frequently saved by a white blood cell that protects the body from bacteria.

The series has a charming cast of characters and with each episode covering a different issue – from scrapes and grazes to food poisoning and heat stroke – there’s something new to discover every time!

Cells at Work initially aired in 2018, while a more adult spin-off – Cells at Work BLACK – aired in 2021.

  2. Ao Ashi

While the first season of soccer anime Ao Ashi didn’t pull up many trees internationally, it’s already considered one of the biggest new sports anime in Japan alongside more popular series like Blue Lock.

Ashito Aoi is the star player for his rural high school football team, but his self-centred attitude and erratic temper ultimately cost his team.

However, his untamed potential catches the eye of Tatsuya Fukuda, an enigmatic football coach and head of professional club Tokyo Esperion’s youth academy, who offers him a chance to make his dreams come true.

If you’re a fan of classic sports anime like Haikyuu, then this is definitely a series you need to check out.

  3. Dropkick on My Devil!

If you’re a fan of fast-paced adult comedy, Dropkick on My Devil is definitely a series you should be checking out!

Yurine, a girl in love with the occult, tries and succeeds in summoning the loud-mouthed demon Jashin. However, with no way to send her back, Jashin is forced to serve Yurine as her familiar.

Jashin has no plans to serve anyone. With killing Yurine her only feasible way back to the underworld, Jashin tries every trick she can think of to make it happen.

Unfortunately, Yurine is much smarter than the arrogant demon, and also cold-hearted enough to kill the demon in increasingly gruesome ways.

Despite the dark setup, much of Dropkick’s entertainment comes from the slice-of-life reverse isekai, as Jashin and her other demonic friends try to be regular citizens with mixed results.

If you’re a fan of shows like The Devil is a Part-Timer, you’ll definitely enjoy this comedy!

  4. Sonny Boy

While Sonny Boy remains divisive for its dense and, at times, confusing sci-fi story, the various awards and nominations the series has received since airing in Summer 2021 are a testament to the show’s quality.

The story follows a group of students who suddenly find their school building trapped in a void. When some discover they have inherited peculiar powers, power struggles break out, making the task of finding their way back to reality even more difficult.

To say Sonny Boy’s style is unorthodox would be putting it mildly – there are few series quite like this, so it’s definitely worth watching at least once.

  5. Anime Gataris

Anime about anime can be something of a risky business, as many people’s experiences are personal and dear to themselves. However, out of the various shows to portray anime fandom, Anime Gataris is probably one of the best.

The story follows anime newbie Minoa, trying to find a show she watched as a child, and rich ice queen Arisu who is desperate to share her otaku passion with someone. Together, they form the Anime Research Club to uncover Minoa’s long-lost series, attracting more fans including a cosplayer, a light novel reader and a chunibyo.

Anime Gataris explores many different parts of anime fandom in a slightly tongue-in-cheek way and with a fun stereotypical cast. However, it’s the end of the series, when the show starts to get pretty meta, where the series won over a lot of fans.

  6. Shadows House

Shadows House has largely flown under the radar regarding the big mystery anime of the last few years, despite two very well-received seasons.

The series revolves around the mysterious, shadow-like residents of a mansion deep in the mountains and the living dolls that serve underneath them. Emilico is a new living doll, ordered to serve under Kate, but as they get closer, they discover dangerous secrets about the house.

If you’re a fan of complex mysteries and unravelling plots, then this is definitely a series you need to check out!

  7. Dance Dance Danseur

MAPPA has become one of the most-followed anime studios over the last few years thanks to their massive action blockbusters. However, this teen drama series is full of emotion alongside the studio’s signature good looks.

The story follows Junpei, a young boy who wanted to do ballet but was dissuaded and told to do something more masculine. His passion for dance is reignited when talented and beautiful ballet dancer Miyako transfers to his school.

Dance Dance Danseur offers everything you would want from a teen drama. Interesting characters, a good mix of romance and comedy, and also some really stunning dances beautifully animated by the MAPPA team.

  8. Asobi Asobase

While it might look like a cute slice of life on the outside, Asobi Asobase is arguably one of the sharpest and most adult comedy anime you’ll find on Crunchyroll.

Asobi Asobase follows three very different classmates at an all-girls middle school who form an unofficial Pastimers Club. The misfits spend most of their free time casually playing random school games, although they usually spiral into some kind of mad event.

The series is known for its random and irreverent comedy, from talking about how babies are made to life-and-death tabletop games. Add an episode on butt lasers (genuinely), and you have a good idea of what to expect from Asobi Asobase.
