The sci-fi romance anime The Tunnel to Summer, the Exit of Goodbyes is officially getting an English-language theatrical release courtesy of HIDIVE.
This anime movie was initially released in Japan back in September 2022, and finally, HIDIVE announced that it will release the film in selected theaters. HIDIVE made the announcement via a new English-subbed trailer.
It may not exactly be a well-known movie among international anime fans, but it is one that many should get excited about given that it got recognized at a major animation festival.
Award-Winning The Tunnel to Summer Is Finally Getting an English Release
The Tunnel to Summer, the Exit of Goodbyes is an anime film by CLAP that’s directed by Tomohisa Taguchi (of Bleach: TYBW and Akudama Drive fame). It’s based on the light novel of the same name by Mei Hachimoku.
Though the film only got a wide release in Japan, it was picked up by the 2023 Annecy International Animation Film Festival. There, the film took home the Paul Grimault Award.
Its recognition at the prestigious Annecy festival is thanks to its unique animation and art style, as well as its interesting sci-fi premise.
The Tunnel to Summer follows Kaoru Touno and Anzu Hanashiro, two troubled youngsters, as they investigate the Urashima Tunnel.
It is said that those who enter the tunnel can get what they want, but this will come at a price.
HIDIVE describes the film as an “unforgettable summer story of nostalgia and sprinting in a remote countryside.”

HIDIVE to Release The Tunnel to Summer, the Exit of Goodbyes in Cinemas in Fall 2023
HIDIVE may be known by anime fans in the US as a streaming platform, but much like Crunchyroll, HIDIVE also releases selected anime films in theaters.
Recently, HIDIVE confirmed that it will release this new sci-fi romance film in theaters, but the announcement did not come with other details.
Based on the English-subtitled trailer though, it should be a safe bet that this film will be released with Japanese audio and English subtitles.
It’s also not known yet which regions the film will be released in. Given that HIDIVE primarily operates in the US, a US release for the film is likely.
What we can say for certain is that The Tunnel to Summer movie will be released in cinemas sometime in Fall 2023.
Expect more details about the film’s theatrical run to be announced in the coming weeks or months.
