One of the many MCU films that is set to release in the coming years is Avengers: Secret Wars which is considered to be the culmination film of the current Multiverse Saga and it will most likely team up the heroes from Phase Four onwards.

So far, the plot details surrounding the film are currently under wraps, but if they follow the comic storyline that it is based on, we can pretty much assume that they will double down on the multiverse aspect of the story.

However, while the project is already in early development, Marvel Studios has not found a director yet and fans are patiently waiting on who they will hire to do the daunting task of helming what is looking to be its biggest film to date.

Now, it looks like they already have a director that they're eyeing to helm the project and it's someone who has a history with Marvel in both the MCU and outside of it.

According to insider @MyTimeToShineH on X, Sam Raimi, who helmed Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Tobey Maguire's Spider-Man trilogy, is Marvel Studios' top choice to direct Avengers: Secret Wars.

It is unknown yet whether Raimi is close to agreeing to helm the project. Marvel Studios has also not commented on the rumor yet.

Raimi is certainly an interesting choice as the potential director of the film and your mileage will vary on whether you'll be excited about this or not. Some fans who did not like Multiverse of Madness already expressed their frustration over this possibility.

However, it should also be pointed out that Raimi was behind the Maguire Spider-Man films which were successful and well-received (at least the first two films) and he has a wonderful track record as a filmmaker since he made his breakthrough in the early '80s.

If the rumors are true that the film will bring back Marvel heroes from non-MCU films including Maguire's Spider-Man, Raimi could also be a great choice since he has experience in making Marvel movies that are both part of the MCU and outside.

There is also a likelihood that Raimi will not end up agreeing to helm the project since it is a daunting task and it would require a Herculean effort to successfully pull off the ambitious project. It's hard to tell if he is up to the task of directing a massive film like this.

We're still years off before the film's release window and it might take a while before we'll hear any updates on the project including whether Raimi does end up being the person they'll hire to direct the film.

Avengers: Secret Wars is slated for release in theaters on May 7, 2027.
