Tom Holland Opens Up About Saving Sony and Disney’s Spider-Man Deal

There was a whole lot of hubbub last year when Disney and Sony failed to come to an agreement over Spider-Man's stay in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The original deal between the studios had Sony retain the film rights to the character in full while Marvel would produce a series of Spider-Man movies in the studio's behalf. While Sony and Disney were fine with the arrangement for a while, there was a lot of behind-the-scenes confusion over the agreement, and so the shareholders decided to renegotiate the terms. Unfortunately, both parties couldn't come to a full agreement.

Thankfully, Spider-Man actor Tom Holland managed to get Disney CEO Bob Iger and Sony chairperson Tom Rothman to reconcile and strike a new deal.

Speaking in an interview with Yahoo! Entertainment during the promotional campaign for Pixar's new computer-animated fantasy movie, Onward, the British actor opened up about the discussions he had with the studios, mentioning gratitude and diplomacy.

"It was a huge learning curve for me, and I was very, very grateful that the two studios allowed me to be a part of that process," Holland told the entertainment news outlet.

"Tom Rothman and Bob Iger were both equally as eager to make this deal happen, and I'm so glad that we were able to do it because I think Spider-Man is now where he belongs," the actor continued, "He's home in the MCU and I'm so grateful that I get to keep playing him in that place. And I hope that [Chris Pratt and I] get to share the screen again one day."

Holland is right. Spider-Man fits perfectly in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Marvel fans instantly fell in love with Holland's version of the wallcrawler ever since his appearance in Captain America: Civil War, and now it's hard to imagine a future without Spider-Man in the MCU.

Phase 4 of the MCU begins when Black Widow premieres on May 1, 2020.
