Tobey Maguire Allegedly Playing 'Hard to Get' for Spider-Man 3

Word has been going around that Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire had signed on for the upcoming Spider-Man movie, and though that sounds nice, it does seem too good to be true. As of now, there are conflicting reports online of the status of the return of both ex-Peter Parkers, but we may have some new details about Maguire's situation.

According to Grace Randolph, Maguire is allegedly playing ‘hard to get' when it comes to his Spider-Man return. Here's what she wrote:

While we should always take news like this with a grain of salt, I wouldn't put it past Maguire to want more out of his return. For one, a lot of people want Maguire to come back, and that would be the huge draw of this film if he ever did. With so much money at stake, it would make sense for Maguire to want more out of Sony.

Personally, I'm kind of conflicted when it comes to Maguire (and Garfield) returning. Tom Holland's Spider-Man has always had some kind of mentor in his films, and it would be great if we actually got to see him come to his own for a full movie. I'm afraid having more Spider-Men would draw attention from Holland's main character, but then again, it's very possible that couldn't happen—with the right story treatment, that is.

For now, we have no official confirmation from Marvel or Sony, but with Spider-Man 3 apparently starting production, we should get some news soon.

Spider-Man 3 is set to come out on Dec. 17, 2021.
