Thor: The Dark World Director Hopes for Film's Snyder Cut Treatment

Whenever Thor: The Dark World comes into the conversation, fans would usually rank it as one of their least favorite MCU films or at the bottom rank of the list. To be fair, the film did well at the box office, but the responses from fans and critics haven't been as high as any of the MCU's mid or top-tier films. The sequel was followed up by Thor: Ragnarok in 2017 which reignited the interest in the God of Thunder.

Eight years after the release of the film, director Alan Taylor reflected in a recent interview with Inverse about his thoughts on the film years later, how he thinks it all went wrong, and how he wants his film to get another chance.

"First of all, I have huge respect for Kevin Feige," Taylor said. "He's doing something that no one else has ever done before and that nobody thought was possible until he did it. Now, everyone's trying to imitate it."

Then he shared a behind-the-scenes story about the film that explains why it probably didn't get a favorable response like the other MCU entries, "I focused all my attention on making a certain movie, and then in the editing process, decisions were made to change it a lot." He also added that while he was brought in to bring the Game of Thrones sensibility (which he directed several episodes of) to the franchise, it ultimately wasn't the way that the studio went.

In the end, he said, "My regret was that the movie that got released was changed quite a bit. I have a great fondness for some of the things that went away in the original cut. There was a kind of quality a wonder to the thing that was beautiful to me."

But when he was asked if he would be interested to do a director's cut of the film, he answered with a definite yes and he even referred to Zack Snyder's Justice League, which was Zack Snyder's original cut for 2017's Justice League, as an example.

"I was cheering for Zack Snyder when he was doing that and thinking, Will he pull this off? This is amazing," he said. "I think every director was kind of rooting for that. I would love to, I mean to. Can you imagine that? They give me however many millions of dollars they gave him to go back in. Yeah, I don't think I'm going to get that phone call."

The chances of Taylor getting his director's cut of Thor: The Dark World is unlikely. The franchise was still able to move forward after the film so there is no reason from a business standpoint to do a new cut. But it would be great to see what the director's original vision for the film is and how it differs from the final cut that we all saw. Perhaps Taylor's cut would be a huge improvement, but we will never know at least for now. Zack Snyder's Justice League showed that anything is possible.
