Thor: Ragnarok Actress Tessa Thompson Promises Marvel Will Push Bounds of Representation in MCU

Marvel may have a long way to go in terms of diversity and representation in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, however, Thor: Ragnarok and Avengers: Endgame star Tessa Thompson promises that the franchise is going to push boundaries when Marvel enters Phase 4 of the MCU.

Speaking in an interview with Ramy Youssef for Variety's Actors on Actors series, Thompson decided to open up about the significance of Marvel improving in its measures for representation and diversity. Sure, Marvel may have been taking progressive steps over the past few years, however, the actress promises that the studio is going to pick up speed in the next phase of the Marvel franchise.

"I think in this next phase of Marvel, we're really talking about what representation looks like in those spaces," Thompson told Youssef.

Thompson recognizes the influence films have in spreading message of acceptance and diversity, and Marvel has an ideal platform that it can use to help promote representation in media.

"Because the truth is these movies travel globally in such huge ways, and if you can represent people that are of colour, if you can represent people with disabilities, if you can represent the LGBTQIA community inside of these films, it's a pretty big deal," the actress said.

It's interesting to hear Thompson promise more diversity in the MCU. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier actor Anthony Mackie just recently discussed his gripes with Marvel when it came to the issue of representation, and now it seems like Marvel is ready to answer the call.

Phase 4 of the MCU begins when Black Widow premieres on November 6, 2020.
