This Is Us Season 6 Episode 9: Kate Pays Toby a Visit in San Francisco
The Big Three strive to make sense of their lives after Rebecca's emotional speech to her children in This Is Us Season 6 Episode 7. Kevin discovered his calling in Episode 8 when he decided to launch the Big Three Homes construction company with Nicky and Cassidy and hire veterans to work for him. It's now up to Kate to decide which huge step she needs to make. And it appears that she begins by attempting to rebuild her marriage with Toby.
Kate tells Toby in the teaser for This Is Us Season 6 Episode 9, “It’s overwhelming, living in two different cities. So I’d like to go to San Francisco with you for the weekend,” while they’re leaving the cabin. The video then shows the couple visiting the sites in the city, and they’re seemingly happy.
Toward the end of the clip, however, Kate says, “I have a full life that I could have never dreamed. But I miss the old Toby.”
Then we see Toby from Season 1 sitting next to Kate, with Kate resting her head on his shoulder.
Kate's choice to pay a visit to Toby in San Francisco is most likely in response to Rebecca's request. To save her relationship with Toby, she wants to make a huge step. However, as we all know, their marriage is irreparable. By the end of This Is Us Season 6 Episode 9, Kate may have found a new meaning in her mother's words. As a result, she will begin to realize that she and Toby are nearing the end of their relationship.

This Is Us creator Dan Fogelman previewed Episode 9 during a press tour (via Parade) and said, “Mandy Moore’s directed recently a really beautiful episode that Chrissy co-wrote that starts this journey [to the end of Kate and Toby’s marriage]. We have some really big stuff for them coming up.”
