Chrissy Metz teased Kate and Phillip's connection in an interview with NBC Insider.
“We’re definitely gonna see who Phillip really is as a human being and how he’s showed up for her as a friend first,” Metz said.
“Right now, he’s a bit of an a**. Everyone’s like, ‘What? Why in the world would she go for him and not want to stay with Toby?’ But we do get to start seeing their commonalities. He’s more than what we ever thought he was.”

In the photos from This Is Us Season 6 Episode 12, Kate and Phillip appear to be on a date. At a restaurant, they share margaritas while Kate smiles at Phillip. In another photo, Phillip caresses Kate's cheek and appears to be going to kiss her on the forehead.
On another occasion, the couple can be seen singing karaoke together. So, in what is likely to be a devastating episode, there's a chance for some happy tears.
Because This Is Us Season 6 Episode 12 hops around in time, viewers will most likely see Kate and Phillip's romance begin. Metz, on the other hand, predicts that they will form a friendship before becoming romantically entangled.

Toby packs his bags
"Kate and Toby's relationship evolves over a few years," according to the synopsis of This Is Us Season 6 Episode 12, co-written by Dan Fogelman, Elizabeth Berger, and Isaac Aptaker, and the photos tease aspects of this "evolution."
As seen in the hour's images, Toby will move out and find a new apartment after their separation. But, because they have children together, Kate and Toby will have to play an important role in each other's life.
