Think Detective Pikachu is Weird? How About a Pikachu Named After a Star Trek Character?

Fans everywhere are still reeling from the Pokemon: Detective Pikachu trailer, with some people, either loving or hating the fact that a semi-realistic Pikachu is voiced by Ryan Reynolds. Reception to the first trailer has been more positive than negative, though that could change when the actual movie comes out next year. Many fans thought that this would be the weirdest thing to ever happen to the Pokemon franchise but it turns out something odder has happened before.

The Electric Tale of Pikachu is one of the most well-known mangas based on the games and anime but one thing fans may have forgotten is the fact that this Pikachu has a name; Jean Luc Pikachu. Yes, that is a Star Trek reference to Jean Luc Picard and it is absolutely glorious.

Unfortunately, the Pokemon's name does not get brought up a lot afterward, with many seeing it as a one-off joke and nothing more. Still, the fact that this manga would reference Star Trek of all things should make many Trekkies smile, along with those that love Pokemon. Also, look at the badge on its chest; that is a Star Trek reference folks.

If you buy Pokemon Let's Go! Pikachu, you can name your partner anything you want (probably not swear words though). Whether you decide to call it Jean Luc Pikachu or Ryan Reynolds is up to you. Pokemon nicknames have been around since Red and Blue, so if you have older games you can change a Pikachu's nickname there as well.

Pokemon Let's Go! Pikachu is now available on the Switch. Pokemon: Detective Pikachu will be showing in theaters on May 11, 2019.
