A new report serves as a warning to Supernatural fans not to expect The Winchesters Season 2 from happening.

The CW is going through a moment of a massive shakeup as The Winchesters try to get off to a good start. The CW just saw a 75% ownership stake acquired by Nexstar, the biggest local TV provider in the US.

The teen-focused network has already experienced numerous cutbacks and prioritization of various content as a result of the change in leadership. These priorities have now made The Winchesters' future unclear.

Plans for The Winchesters Season 2 Shelved

Deadline reports that The CW's new management has chosen against renewing The Winchesters and fellow spinoff Walker: Independence. The two shows will therefore continue with the 13 episodes that were initially planned. The same is anticipated to be true for each and every new network program.

The CW series follows the 1970s versions of John Winchester (Drake Rodger) and Mary Campbell (Meg Donnelly) as they fall in love and look for their missing fathers. Despite the fact that it focuses on different characters, the prequel is inextricably linked to the original series.

Jensen Ackles narrates the show and appears on-screen occasionally, as well as working as an executive producer behind the scenes. Supernatural fan favorites also make cameos.

The CW Yet to Make Formal Decisions

The CW's new president, Dennis Miller, was careful to emphasize that no choices had been made for the upcoming season. This would imply that the absence of new episodes does not necessarily indicate that the show is about to be canceled.

The Winchesters, which has just aired four episodes of its first season, performs reasonably well in the ratings compared to what The CW typically attracts and is a part of a well-known franchise. The Winchesters Season 2 would undoubtedly benefit if the ratings held steady or even increased.

But more generally, in line with The CW's older audience, the network is eschewing dramas with a younger demographic in favor of less expensive, unscripted series. It implies that it's doubtful that viewers will witness a repetition of Supernatural's incredible 15-season run on television as cancellations continue.

The Winchesters will probably have a shorter run based on the current course of The CW and the nature of the prequel itself.
