The Suicide Squad's James Gunn Teases a Comic Book Film with the Most Practical Effects

CGI and comic book films have always gone hand in hand, and at some point, it's amazing if a movie doesn't manage to rely on it too much. With The Suicide Squad wrapping production, director James Gunn teases that the film won't use too much VFX this time around.

As per Gunn's IG (via Fandom), the film is going to be relying heavily on practical effects and sets—possibly more than any other comic book film:

It's worth noting that you don't really need a lot of CG to make a comic book film interesting; Todd Phillips' Joker is a testament to that. If anything, I think all we really want out of these movies is a good story; the spectacle doesn't necessarily have to come from a "big CGI thing."

If anything, I'm expecting this film to look a lot like Gunn's Super. That movie was heavily inspired by comic books, and it was ridiculously violent as well. With DC embracing the R-rating with its movies, you would think that Gunn would add a butt-load of violence in something called The Suicide Squad.

We don't have a plot for the movie yet, but knowing Gunn, I'm sure he has something interesting in mind. While I don't think all of his jokes always land in films, Gunn has a very interesting way of structuring his stories so they all come together in the end.
