Before Harley Quinn made it into the big screen, as portrayed by Margot Robbie, the character made her first debut in Batman: The Animated Series. Since then, Harley has been a fan-favorite villain. Robbie will make her return as the Cupid of Crime in James Gunn's The Suicide Squad, who promises his take on the character to be influenced by the animated show.

When asked on Twitter on how the director would describe his take on Harley, Gunn said, it'll be like an "exploding Paul Dini-esque," which is a clear reference to one of Harley's co-creators in Batman: The Animated Series.

A set video from The Suicide Squad shows Robbie's Harley Quinn wearing a long, red gown while holding a javelin. The director's answer seems to describe his take on the character very well, since Harley is seen sporting blonde hair along with red and black, which is actually a comic-accurate color scheme, as opposed to the pink and blue dye.

Gunn didn't provide any other details as to how he'll make this version different from what is already shown in previous movies, but fans of the character will surely be intrigued in what's to come.

In a previous interview, Robbie teased that fans will get to see another side of Harley in Gunn's film. "It's interesting," she said. "You keep getting to meet her at different points in her life, as if a couple of years have gone by."

The Suicide Squad is set for release on August 6, 2021.
