Hugh Jackman's phenomenal take on Wolverine in Fox's X-Men franchise is still held in such high regard today and is often talked about as one of the best film portrayals of a comic book character.

There's a reason why the Australian actor was given the privilege of playing the iconic character for 17 long years and with the mutants finally coming to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the next actor to play Logan on the big screen will surely have the unenviable task of topping Jackman's performance.

Now, it's still unclear when and how the mutants will join the MCU and it's safe to assume that Marvel Studios is in no hurry to work on the reboot, especially considering they have a lot on their plate right now. However, Avengers: Endgame directors Joe and Anthony Russo seem to be interested in helming a solo Wolverine project this early in the game.

During an appearance on Lights Camera Barstool podcast (via GamesRadar), 1/2 of the Russo Brothers opened up about their desire to direct a solo project featuring arguably the most popular X-Men character. Joe said: "To realize him on screen, it's very hard because Hugh Jackman's performance is definitive. It's like Batman, you have to really think of a way to, you have to find the right actor to come in and give a really different take to that character."

He added: "But I would really love to see him on screen. I think the best thing is to take a break, without question. You need a palate cleanser, you need to rinse the towel a little bit, let everyone enjoy what was, and then come up with something new. But I'd love to take a crack at Wolverine at some point."

Personally, I'm totally on board with this idea. While the Russo Brothers didn't come to the franchise until Phase 2, they still proved that they know how to handle a comic book film property. After all, they're the directors of the highest-grossing film of all time and that alone should be enough to convince you that they know what they're doing.

Meanwhile, Avengers: Endgame is available for streaming on Disney+.
