The Reason Why Goku's Power Pole is Returning in Dragon Ball Super: Broly

Toei Animation

While Dragon Ball Super introduced new characters, transformations, and universes we've never seen in Dragon Ball Z, the upcoming Dragon Ball Super: Broly film will bring back a lot of classic elements introduced years ago. Other than the canonization of Broly, the film will also bring back Goku's Nyoibo or "power pole" from the Dragon Ball series.

The Dragon Ball series introduced the Nyoibo, which is a magical staff that Master Korin gave to Master Roshi, who then passed it to Grandpa Gohan, who then gave it to young Goku. Goku used the power pole as a weapon in the classic Dragon Ball series. The staff can extend to great lengths so Goku can use it to reach great heights.

According to the tweets above, Dragon Ball Super's animation director Naohiro Shintani's wife inspired him to bring the power pole back, and also feature it in the first promo images for the film. Shintani says that it's meaningful to see Goku with the "Compliant Pole" because it symbolizes "returning to square one."

Dragon Ball Super: Broly synopsis:

"This is the story of a new Saiyan. Earth is peaceful following the Tournament of Power. Realizing that the universes still hold many more strong people yet to see, Goku spends all his days training to reach even greater heights. Then one day, Goku and Vegeta are faced by a Saiyan called 'Broly' who they've never seen before. The Saiyans were supposed to have been almost completely wiped out in the destruction of Planet Vegeta, so what's this one doing on Earth? This encounter between the three Saiyans who have followed completely different destinies turns into a stupendous battle, with even Freeza (back from Hell) getting caught up in the mix."

Dragon Ball Super is available for streaming on Crunchyroll Saturdays at 7:15 p.m. CST. Toonami still airs the English dub of Dragon Ball Super on Adult Swim Saturdays at 9:30 p.m. It's also available to stream on FunimationNOW and Amazon. The upcoming Dragon Ball Super film will be released in Japan on December 14 and it's expected to be released in US sometime in January 2019.
