The Razzie Awards Go Against The Oscar’s New Popular Film Category In An Open Letter

Last week word came out that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences decided to create a new category for the yearly Oscars – one called the Outstanding Achievement in Popular Film.

The new category has been added because of the Oscar's low ratings in recent years. According to the Academy, there have been "concerns of those who find the show too long and boring," and so the category was created while the organization planned a new structure for its Oscar's program. However, while some analysts believe that the Outstanding Achievement in Popular Film category can be a great way to add more popular blockbuster films like Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Avengers: Infinity War, Black Panther and Deadpool to the Academy's list of films, others consider this new category a "joke" and an "insult" to the industry.

One of those against the Popular Film category is The Razzies, sending a brief open letter to the Academy in its Razz Blog. In the letter, the mock award organization address the Academy and start with an admission of how they often "get it wrong" and get called out, but they just ignore the criticism because no one really takes their award ceremony seriously.

According to the group, the statuette that they give out every year that usually costs around $4.97 is there to let talented artists know that "they done bad," and that effort's going to be even more demeaning once the Academy adds its "Popular Film" category. To the Razzies, the Academy is "lowering themselves to ‘honor'" popular projects and the whole inclusion of the category doesn't work that well for their brand.

What do you think of the Oscar's new category? Does it demean the Academy Award's yearly event? Or does it give blockbuster films the opportunity to gain some major recognition?
