It looks like the end has officially arrived for The Punisher and for Jessica Jones. Netflix just announced the cancellation of the two of its three remaining Marvel TV series today, axing The Punisher a month after the release of its second season.
While Marvel fans have been crossing their fingers hoping for a third batch of episodes for The Punisher, Deadline reports that the show has just been cut down to its second season after Netflix's decision to put the series on the chopping board along with Jessica Jones. Krysten Ritter's series, on the other hand, is still set to appear on the streaming site with its third batch of episodes. After that, Jessica Jones is gone for good.
"Marvel's The Punisher will not return for a third season on Netflix," the streaming giant confirmed in a statement. "Showrunner Steve Lightfoot, the terrific crew, and an exceptional cast including star Jon Bernthal delivered an acclaimed and compelling series for fans, and we are proud to showcase their work on Netflix for years to come."
Netflix also thanked Ritter along with Jessica Jones showrunner Melissa Rosenberg as well as the rest of the series' cast and crew, acknowledging the show's "three incredible seasons of this groundbreaking series, which was recognized by the Peabody Awards among many others."
The cancellation barely comes as a surprise to the fanbase. As heartbreaking as it is, fans started expecting the end for The Punisher and Jessica Jones as soon as Netflix decided to ax Iron Fist, Luke Cage, and the critically-acclaimed series, Daredevil. Speculation that The Punisher would be the next in line on the chopping board rose when Netflix refused to make any season 3 renewal for the series.
It's certainly a sad day for the Marvel fanbase.
