The Orville's Future After Season 3 Reportedly In Doubt

It's been three years now since the second season of The Orville aired and fans have been looking forward to seeing the third season which will finally premiere this June after a long delay mostly due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, there are some who are already wondering if there are plans for the show to have a fourth season. As it turns out, that is not the case yet.

According to Deadline, there are no current plans yet for the fourth season of The Orville. In addition, the cast of the series was released back in August when their most recent options expired, meaning the cast is no longer contractually obligated to return in the series if a fourth season gets an official greenlit by Hulu.

Seth MacFarlane, the creator, writer, director, executive producer, and star of The Orville, is currently busy working on the Ted TV series for Peacock where he is set to do the same duties including reprising the voice role of the titular character. His Orville co-star, Scott Grimes, has also been cast to be part of the upcoming series.

However, it doesn't mean that MacFarlane doesn't have any plans in the future to do a fourth season of The Orville since the upcoming third season is not designed as the last hurrah for the Orville crew and the door has been left open for him to do another season if he chooses to revisit it. A new deal has to be made with the cast if ever they decided to do a fourth season.

It may be concerning to hear this news at the moment, but it looks like there is no indication that we should be worried regarding the show's renewal chances as it seems that they are open to doing another season and, given that it is now on the Hulu streaming service, they don't need to worry about the ratings in terms of deciding if they should greenlit a fourth season. We should be able to hear news or updates in the future after the third season airs whether MacFarlane will do another installment.

Set 400 years in the future, the third season titled The Orville: New Horizons finds the crew of the U.S.S. Orville continuing their mission of exploration, as they navigate both the mysteries of the universe and the complexities of their own interpersonal relationships. The ensemble cast includes MacFarlane, Adrianne Palicki, Penny Johnson Jerald, Scott Grimes, Peter Macon, J. Lee, Mark Jackson, Chad L. Coleman, Jessica Szohr, and Anne Winters.
