The Matrix Director is Happy Fans are Discovering the Franchise's Transgender Undertones

The Matrix continues to be one of the most iconic pieces of cinema ever made, even if its sequels could have been a lot better. While that movie remains timeless, a lot has changed since the first movie came out with The Wachowski Brothers now being The Wachowski Sisters, or just The Wachowskis. Both are now living happily as trans women, which led to a lot of people realizing that these movies actually have some transgender themes and undertones.

After all, the series is about disregarding the current reality and embracing a new one, along with all the dangers that come with it. Honestly, it's something that a lot of trans people have a difficult thing doing and they should be applauded for living their lives and being happier that way. Lily Wachowski recently spoke with Netflix Film Club and is quite happy that fans have discovered these undertones from The Matrix.

I'm glad that it has gotten out, that was the original intention. But the world wasn't quite ready yet at a corporate level. The corporate world wasn't ready for it. When you make movies and it's this public art form, I think any kind of art that you put into the universe there's a letting go process. Because it's entering into public dialogue. I like that there's an evolution process that we as human beings engage in art in a nonlinear way. We can always talk about something in new ways, and in new light.

She isn't wrong about the world not being ready for all these radical genders and sexual identities back then, with some people showing that they aren't ready for it now. Unfortunately, a lot of these conservative circles have taken the red pill/blue pill allegory from The Matrix and twisted it into something insulting, which Wachowski isn't a fan of either.

Sadly, Lily Wachowski won't be returning to The Matrix 4, though her sister Lana Wachowski will be directing the movie. The Matrix 4 will be coming out on April 1, 2022.
