It looks like Stanley Ipkiss is sort of returning to the big screen. Mike Richardson, the creator of The Mask, has just confirmed plans to remake the beloved Jim Carrey classic but with an awesome twist. This time, a female comedian could end up donning the mask.
Richardson recently spoke to Forbes about his plans, confirming that he already has someone in mind to lead the reboot.
"I'd like to see a really good physical comedian [in the role]," Richardson said. "I have one in mind, but I'm not gonna say her name. We have to do a lot of convincing for this particular actor, but we'll see ... You never know what's coming in the future. We have some ideas."
But don't expect someone like Melissa McCarthy or Ali Wong to replicate Carrey's iconic performance. According to Richardson, the reboot of The Mask will focus on a completely different character.
"I'd like it to be another character film about a person dealing with absolute power," he said. "The whole theme of The Mask was we all say what we would do if we had absolute power, just like Stanley Ipkiss. When we get absolute power, we often resort to the most petty of endeavors and it's overcoming our human nature and using the power for good. Stan Lee said, ‘with great power comes great responsibility,' but my thing is an older axiom, which is ‘absolute power corrupts absolutely.'"
Wise words indeed, but when can fans expect to see The Mask all over again on the big screen? Richardson says they are doing things one step at a time.
"It's a great character, you'll be seeing him again and we've got a version that sticks closer to the original comic version coming up from a well-known show producer and writer," he said.
