A lot of fans have been looking forward to the release of The Marvels in less than two weeks. Disney has also been ramping up trailers and TV spots for the film to hype up the next MCU joint to the worldwide audience.

However, based on the early projections, it looks like the film's box office success is in jeopardy as the presales were nowhere near the level of the recent releases, and the opening weekend numbers are expected to significantly decrease from the first film.

Some critics and journalists have also noted that the review embargo for the film won't be lifted until just hours before the film arrives in the international market which is seen as a discouraging sign.

Now, a new report has emerged that suggests that we may have to temper our expectations surrounding its quality based on an earlier test screening.

A recent report from Variety that detailed the current state of the MCU revealed that The Marvels received "middling" test screening scores when it was shown to an audience in Texas last June.

Usually, Marvel Studios only solicits feedback from Disney employees and their friends and families, but for the upcoming film, they decided to show it to a public audience.

Director Nia DaCosta's involvement in the sequel was also put into question since they reported that she started working on another project earlier this year while The Marvels was still in post-production.

"If you’re directing a $250 million movie, it’s kind of weird for the director to leave with a few months to go," said a source close to the production.

The report also added that the film underwent four weeks of reshoots to "bring coherence to a tangled storyline" and it resulted in the release date being shifted from July to November.

This is certainly not a great sign for the film and some fans have also noticed that Disney has been tempering their marketing compared to the other MCU releases although that might have something to do with the actors' strike which has prevented the cast members from doing a press tour.

There is a possibility that Disney and Marvel Studios are nervous about the reception that the film will receive which is why they are holding it back to the critics until just a few days before its release.

It's interesting to see what the box office results will be as some have predicted that it will underperform compared to 2019's Captain Marvel, which is the kind of result that Marvel is not hoping for as they don't want to have another disappointment after Quantumania.

The Marvels is set to arrive in theaters this coming November 10.
