The Mandalorian was always meant to bridge the gap between the original and sequel trilogies and the ongoing season has made it even more obvious. The explosive and jaw-dropping Chapter 23 continues to plant more seeds with the re-emergence of villains we first saw in the divisive sequels — the Elite Praetorian Guards.

Making their debut appearances in 2017's The Last Jedi, the crimson guards of the First Order operated as protectors of Supreme Leader Snoke. Apparently, the Praetorian Guards have been around longer than you might think but unlike the troopers, they were only used to provide formidable backup for what remains of the Empire in dire situations.

In Chapter 23, titled "The Spies", the returning Moff Gideon met with the Shadow Council and requested three Praetorian Guards as reinforcements against the Mandalorians. Later in the episode, the menacing villains appear at Gideon's Imperial hideout in Mandalore and killed Paz Vizsla after his grueling battle with the beskar-armored troopers.

Their involvement in the show might come as a surprise to many of you, but ahead of Season 3's release, there have been persistent rumors suggesting that the Praetorian Guards will in fact show up in the MandoVerse.

The explosive episode ended with Gideon outsmarting the Mandalorians and taking Din Djarin hostage. Now that he's made it clear that he wants to take over Mandalore and become its ruler, do the Mandalorian tribes stand a chance against him and his Imperial forces? Season 3's finale is already shaping up to be the show's best episode yet.

The Mandalorian Season 3's seventh episode is now streaming on Disney+.
