In The Last of Us gameplay, you’d be surprised to know that Joel and Ellie weren’t exactly an immediate kickoff at the beginning. In fact, Joel had had his doubts that Ellie’s immunity to the virus would ever save the human race if they agreed to take the kid all the way to the Fireflies’ camp. However, their luck had changed, which led Joel to lay down the ground rules that restricts them from becoming more than travelers together:

Rule 1: We keep our histories to ourselves
Rule 2: You don’t tell anyone about your condition.
Rule 3: Do what I say when I say it.

However, it was Tess (Anna Torv), Joel’s companion at the time, who convinced him to take the kid, seeing as they had to exchange Ellie for more weapons for survival, anyway. Now, if Neil Druckmann and Craig Mazin do plan on directly adapting the source material, it is highly likely we’ll get to see this interaction in the series, too.

However, just before they could even reach the man who got the map to the Fireflies’ camp, Tess admits to getting bitten. When Joel sees her arm infected, Tess compares it with Ellie’s which was three weeks old, and yet somehow it didn’t look as bad. Leaving Tess behind had to be one of the toughest decisions Joel had to face since losing his only daughter, Sarah, years before he even met Ellie.

This then leads to Joel and Ellie eventually having to manage on their own. Before Ellie could attempt to comfort the guy, Joel stood his ground and tells her the three rules he has for the entire trip, which Pedro Pascal dictates on the trailer. You can catch The Last of Us streaming on HBO on January 15, 2023.
