The Last of Us Episode 4 Recap

The Last of Us Episode 4, Please Hold My Hand, brings the action back in the series as Joel and Ellie's journey takes a detour in a dangerous turf where people are savage and ruthless, led by Kathleen who has been searching for Henry and Sam.

It all starts with Ellie having some "me" time while facing a mirror and trying out the gun she took from Bill and Frank's. Ellie seems to be feeling it, looking like she loves the hype of it but at the same time, there's some reluctance in her eyes.

Ellie gets out and sees Joel siphoning some gas from other cars and with Ellie like a real curious child, naïve to the world outside, she is amazed by the simplest things like siphoning. Also, Ellie continues being a child as she brings out a joke book and innocently laughs at every joke.

While that's annoying for Joel, the trip must go on. (Imagine being stuck in a car with a kid throwing you a bunch of jokes from a joke book?) Ellie is a curious cat as they push through with the journey, looking at every pocket of the truck, bringing out a Hank Williams cassette tape.

As Joel puts it in, Ellie finds an adult magazine with guys all over it. Yikes, that's too rated-R for her and she even jokes at Joel that the pages are stuck together before cracking a laugh then throwing the magazine out. Ellie witnesses a whole lot of new things but the time is up for rest.

Tired, they camp in an isolated area in the woods and Joel cooks up a 20-year old Chef Boyardee ravioli. Ellie asks if they could put up some fire because it is freezing but Joel refuses, not because of the infected, but because some other people may see it.

By the time they hit the sack, Ellie continues to crack up some jokes before sleeping. Morning comes and they are back on the wheels, Joel makes coffee which Ellie didn't really like because of its smell, even figuring that it is what Starbucks would sell back in the Quarantine Zone.

Joel tells Ellie to remain on the map as they are headed to Wyoming where Tommy is. Ellie gets curious once more as she asks the name of Tommy and what happened to him that made Joel run after him.

Joel reveals that Tommy wants to be a hero and when he didn't feel like one when sent to war, by the time the outbreak hits the city, they did what they had to do to survive. That's where they meet Tess, then Tommy meets Marlene who invites him to be part of the Fireflies. To Joel's knowledge, Tommy disbanded from the Fireflies.

Ellie asks Joel if he has no hope for humanity left, then why save her? Joel reveals that she is just a cargo and she made a promise to Tess so he is keeping his promise to her because she was as close as he could get as a family when the outbreak hit.

Unfortunately, their trip takes a huge turn as the road ahead has been jammed by a truck. Joel and Ellie would have to go through a town before heading back to the highway but that it where they hit the big roadblock. There are people and it is an ambush.

As bullets start to fly, Joel ensures Ellie is safe and he does everything in his power to eliminate the threat. Joel sends Ellie through a hole in the wall that only she could fit. Still, Joel overlooks the fact that someone could come through a door, and there, Joel fights for his life.

The Last of Us Episode 4 Recap

Ellie, knowing that she could save Joel, musters all the guts and courage she has to bring out her gun and fire at the guy who is killing Joel. Ellie pulls the trigger and injures the guy who later pleads for his life before Joel sends Ellie away then kills the threat.

As Joel and Ellie stay low looking for some shelter, the scene cuts to a woman interrogating an old man in what looks like a FEDRA base, except that the woman is not a FEDRA agent nor is the old man. It is Kathleen looking for Henry and extracting information from the old man who happens to be a doctor.

Kathleen deduces that the doctor knows where Henry is, then, by the time Kathleen is about to kill him, she hears a commotion outside. Kathleen's army lays down the bodies of the people killed by Joel and they think that mercenaries attacked them.

The Last of Us Episode 4 Recap

While Kathleen seems to be a soft-spoken woman, she is actually a ruthless leader of the Kansas City Quarantine Zone which looks like the place has been overtaken by the people. Everyone looks up to Kathleen for orders and she tells her army to search every house to look for Henry and kill those who help him.

Meanwhile, Joel and Ellie are hiding when Joel tries to talk to Ellie about being a kid and supposedly not being someone who pulls the trigger. Ellie reveals to Joel that it isn't her first time firing at someone, she learned at FEDRA school, and Joel teaches her how to properly handle a gun.

The army of Kathleen finds something at an abandoned building where there are signs of Henry and Sam, drawings everywhere and empty cans. Kathleen deduces that they ran out of food, but the leader of Kathleen's army, Perry, shows her something else -- it's the infected from the ground.

Kathleen orders them to seal off the building and that they would have to find Henry and Sam first before dealing with the infected later on.

Meanwhile, Joel and Ellie spot a place to stay for the night and they go up a tall building where they set up camp for rest. Joel scatters some glass shards so they would know when some people are trying to sneak up on them while they are sleeping. Ellie asks Joel if that would be effective and Joel insists on it.

Just before they sleep, Ellie tells Joel a joke he couldn't handle and they laugh it all off before dozing off. However, a panicking Ellie wakes Joel up where a man and a child are pointing guns to them -- Henry and Sam.
