The Last of Us Episode 3 Drops Awesome Mortal Kombat 2 Easter Egg

The Last of Us Episode 3 may have left viewers in tears but it also had some funny moments which include a cool reference to Mortal Kombat 2.

In The Last of Us Episode 3, Joel and Ellie make their way to Bill and Frank's compound. On the way, they drop by a farm where Joel leaves his stash. Interestingly, the farm happens to have an old arcade cabinet that Ellie realizes is for Mortal Kombat II. She immediately geeks out over the game, raving about Mileena's brutal finishing move.

It's an awesome reference to one of the greatest fighting games in history and also a cool nod to one of the best characters in Mortal Kombat.

But did the original game actually feature Mortal Kombat 2? The title isn't referenced in The Last of Us. Instead, Ellie gushes about a fictional video game and her comments about a friend teaching her about MK2 come from a DLC.

In the Last of Us Left Behind DLC, Ellie and Riley come across an arcade cabinet for the fictional fighting game The Turning. Although it doesn't work, Riley calls out buttons for Ellie to hit as they pretend to play it.

Another lighthearted moment in The Last of Us Episode 3 involved the return of Tess in a flashback. In the scene, Joel and Tess are invited to Bill and Frank's compound as they make plans to work together. The sequence features a younger version of Joel and Tess and it was great to see both of them during happier times.

Fans also praised Nick Offerman and Murray Bartlett for their performances as the gay couple Bill and Frank. Although the two are only set to appear in one episode, it was certainly one of the best episodes in the series so far.

The Last of Us Episode 3 is now streaming on HBO Max.
