The Last Airbender Creators have ‘Planted Seeds’ to Expand the World of Avatar in the Future

Avatar creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino were set to develop a live-action version of the show for Netflix, but things kind of went south, and both left the project due to creative differences. With fans just asking Netflix to drop the series altogether, Konietzko and DiMartino have teased the potential of the Avatar universe to grow in the future.

When asked by Polygon about the future of Avatar, DiMartino had confirmed:

"Yes, there are many seeds we planted through both series and in the graphic novels that could be expanded on and explored. The Avatar universe is a big place and has a long history so there's a lot of potential for new stories."

There were no specifics when it came to the form of those expansions, but seeing as the Last Airbender, and now Korra are getting some renewed attention, we could be looking at expansions of the world besides the comics.

If you ask me, the live-action adaptation was a bad idea from the get-go even with Konietzko and DiMartino onboard. With ATLA already being such a solid show in itself, there's only room to expand the story. I'm sure they would have done better if they just made a live-action film focusing on the adult Team Avatar going on a new adventure. Why does it even have to be live-action? Why don't they just go full anime and give us an OVA?

For now, Netflix is confident in pushing forward with their live-action Avatar, but fans are already jumping ship. With no release date set, you can check out The Last Airbender and Legend of Korra now on Netflix.
