The Fall 23 season is officially in full swing as lots of new shows finally premiered over the weekend. Among these is The Kingdoms of Ruin, a dark fantasy anime that some fans think is even edgier than Goblin Slayer.

That’s quite a feat, especially considering how Goblin Slayer drew a lot of attention when its first season aired years ago. If you watched The Kingdoms of Ruin’s premiere though, you’ll understand why.

The Kingdoms of Ruin is an anime by Yokohama Animation Laboratory, the studio behind shows like The Great Cleric and Lapis Re:Lights. It’s based on a manga of the same name that has been serialized since 2019.

As for its story, the anime is set in a world where magic-wielding witches helped humanity flourish. This all changed when the Redia Empire developed technology that made magic and witches obsolete.

Soon, the Redia Empire decided that magic and witches must be purged. Thus began a slaughter of witches throughout the lands.

This anime’s first episode follows the witch Chloe and her human apprentice Adonis. Chloe and Adonis are attacked by soldiers and are captured.

Chloe is soon humiliated and then executed while Adonis is imprisoned. Years later, Adonis is freed by another prisoner named Doroka. Thus begins Adonis’ quest for revenge against humanity.

Based on its first episode alone, The Kingdoms of Ruin is already shaping up to be one of the edgiest shows of the season. In fact, some are even saying that it outdoes other edgy shows like Goblin Slayer and Shield Hero.

This new show may not have the shock factor of Goblin Slayer’s first episode, but it does have some incredibly dark scenes. For instance, Chloe’s execution can be hard to watch for some viewers.

Aside from its dark and edgy story, viewers are also looking forward to more as the first episode had some good animation, based on opinions from discussions on Reddit.

New episodes of The Kingdoms of Ruin are released every week on Crunchyroll in the US and other selected regions.

If that’s not enough edge for you, there’s also Ragna Crimson, another dark fantasy anime that’s getting a lot of attention recently.
