The Green Knight Trailer Pits Dev Patel Against a Supernatural Foe

It has been a long wait for The Green Knight, A24's supernatural take on the King Arthur legend. After all, the film was supposed to premiere last year but needed to be delayed due to COVID-19. Luckily, the movie is finally getting its premiere, as confirmed by a new trailer that pits Dev Patel against the mysterious titular character.

The trailer for The Green Knight opens with King Arthur (Sean Harris) gathering his court and asking for someone to regale them with a story or a tale. However, the meeting is interrupted by the arrival of a stranger who looks more like a tree than a man.

Interestingly, the man has a proposition for the king, He asks that Arthur allow one of his knights to try and land a blow against him. Although Arthur isn't eager to give in to the request, his nephew Sir Gawain (Patel) volunteers and immediately launches an attack.

Amazingly, Gawain was able to chop the man's head off. However, the stranger simply picks the head up and announces, "One year hence" before laughing wickedly and riding away holding his head up high quite literally.

From there, Gawain believes he is done with the Green Knight (Ralph Ineson) but Arthur urges him to seek the man out. This leads to an epic journey as Gawain seeks the strange opponents and possibly finds himself.

The Green Knight is actually based on the late 14th-century poem Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. So far, the trailer confirms that the film will be faithful to the source and there is little doubt that this is one movie to watch out for this year.

The Green Knight is directed by David Lowery and also stars, Alicia Vikander, Joel Edgerton, Sarita Choudhury, Kate Dickie, Barry Keoghan, and The Falcon and The Winter Soldier actress Erin Kellyman. The film is scheduled for release on July 30, 2021.
