The Detective Pikachu Trailer Looks Better Than Everyone Thought it Would

After years of dreading it, Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures have released the very first trailer to Detective Pikachu. Maybe it's because we've all become cynical when it comes to Hollywood adapting anime or video games but the trailer is better than it should be. It also has a ton of "realistic" looking Pokemon, which can be a bit jarring at first but gets better as the trailer goes on.

We're introduced to Justice Smith, a police officer who had dreams of being a Pokemon trainer, though he never reached them for reasons unknown. One night, he runs into a Pikachu that crashes into his apartment and, to the surprise of both of them, they can understand each other. In a bit that's actually pretty humorous, Smith's character hears the voice of Ryan Reynolds while everyone else just hears the Pikachu voice we all know and love.

From what can be seen, it looks like Smith's character, named Tim, is teaming up with Pikachu to find his father and confirm if he is alive or dead. Godzilla star Ken Watanabe is also seen here as the head of the police, who seems to be pretty close to Tim. He even knows that Tim wanted to be a Pokemon master.

Of course, what will really get fans talking are the Pokemon that appear throughout the trailer. Everyone from Charmander, Bulbasaur, and freaking Greninja make appearances, the latter of whom seems to be a constant threat to both Pikachu and Tim. There's also a humorous scene with Mr. Mime, which might actually generate a chuckle or two from people.

It's too early to say that Detective Pikachu looks "good" but it's better than it should be. The film hits theaters on May 11, 2019.
