The Boys Co-Creator Explains Why Marvel Movies Cause Problems for Comedies

There's no doubt that Marvel Studios movies often dominate the box office, with a comedic touch alongside the action and thrill. However, the prevalence of these Marvel Cinematic Universe comedic blockbusters in this day and age has made it harder for comedy films with modest budgets to survive.

That's according to The Boys co-creator Seth Rogen, explaining to GamesRadar that it can be a struggle for mid-level comedy films to make a big impact in the box office, especially when up against MCU movies.

"Something that me and Evan talk about a lot is how Marvel movies are comedies," Rogen says. "Thor: Ragnarok is a comedy. Ant-Man is a comedy at its core. So that's what's out there."

"There are $200 million comedies out there, and so that's something, as a comedic filmmaker, to be aware of," he continues. "That is the benchmark that people expect!"

Rogen adds that these "huge budget films function like comedies," pointing out that the audiences still "love" and "want" comedy, such as Deadpool. However, the scope is "huge," and when movies are not offered to that level, you rethink about what you're actually offering the audience.

"That's why something like Good Boys does well because we're not offering scope," Rogen said. "What we're offering is pure comedy and emotion and relatability and nostalgia. That's the trade-off."

Of course, the MCU movies aren't strictly comedies and Rogen doesn't think mid-size comedy is dead as it stands now. In addition, Rogen has had plenty of experience when it comes to sci-fi projects, with the addition of his comedic touch.
