Prior to the release of The Batman, there were already plans for HBO Max spinoff shows including a Gotham PD prequel series and the Penguin series starring Colin Farrell. Recently, director Matt Reeves mentioned that they are also working on an Arkham Asylum series which turns out that it evolved from the supposed Gotham PD project. Some fans are wondering if they still have plans to do a Gotham PD spinoff series and, now, we finally have the answer.
During an interview in the Happy Sad Confused podcast (via TVLine), Reeves revealed that the Gotham PD spinoff series project that was announced a while ago is officially no longer moving forward. He said, "One thing that we’re not doing that I was gonna do… So, there’s the Gotham police show, which, that one actually is put on hold. We’re not really doing that."
The Gotham PD spinoff series was supposed to be set during Batman's "year one" and focus on the corruption in the Gotham City Police Department, particularly from the perspective of a crooked cop where they "must reckon with the emergence of Batman and its own corruption." However, there were speculations recently prior to this announcement that the project might be in limbo when Reeves indicated that they are working on an Arkham Asylum spinoff series.
It is unfortunate that the Gotham PD spinoff series is no longer moving forward since the concept sounded interesting and it would have been great to explore Gotham City from a different perspective. Reeves indicated in the interview that there were creative differences between him and HBO Max, which "didn’t not like the idea" and alluded that they prefer a less corrupt protagonist.
Even though the project has been canceled, we're still getting the Penguin spinoff series and the Arkham Asylum series, which seems to be the replacement for this. Either way, we are going to be treated with more stories from Reeves' Batman universe. Also, the Arkham Asylum series sounded very interesting as it is an opportunity for them to explore more villain characters that haven't been introduced in the film.
