Tatami Time Machine Blues is a sequel to Tomihiko Morimi's novel, The Tatami Galaxy. It follows the original book's protagonist trying to go back in time to stop his friend Ozu from breaking the remote of their apartment building's air conditioner in the middle of a sweltering heat wave.

Tatami Time Machine Blues is being produced by Science Saru and will consist of only six episodes. The first five episodes, which will adapt the novel's story, will then be compiled into a film version that will get a limited release in theaters in Japan. The sixth episode, which is set to be an original story, will not be included in the compilation film and will only stream exclusively on Disney+.

Shingo Natsume will be directing the anime at studio Science Saru. The series will feature most of the cast of the Tatami Galaxy anime including Shintaro Asanuma as the nameless protagonist, Maaya Sakamoto as Akashi, Hiroyuki Yoshino as Ozu, Junichi Suwabe as Jogasaki, and Yuko Kaida as Hanuki. Kazuya Nakai will play the character Higuchi, who was originally voiced by the late Keiji Fujiwara.

Tatami Time Machine Blues will premiere exclusively on Disney+ on September 14, 2022.
