Taika Waititi Talks Working on Star Wars: The Mandalorian

Besides the release of Star Wars Episode IX, a lot of people are looking forward to the first live-action SW show The Mandalorian. Jon Favreau has hired a bunch of guest directors for the first season, one of them being Thor: Ragnarok helmer Taika Waititi. Waititi talks a bit about jumping from a Marvel project onto Star Wars.

Talking to the Observer, Waititi confirms that there are a lot more rules when it comes to working on something as "sacred" as Star Wars. Waititi explains:

"There's definitely some of the stuff I've learned over the years from working with [Jemaine Clement] and [Paul Simms] and everyone else back home that I have brought to my episode… But I can't… It's a very sacred universe, the Star Wars universe, so I can't do too much of it."

Admittedly, Star Wars, like Marvel, has a very strict formula that the directors have to adhere to, but Waititi was amazingly given a lot of freedom when it came to his work on Ragnarok. When it comes to doing something a bit more creative, Waititi confirms that he has to double-check with the higher ups—even when working with Marvel. He says, "I gotta check. Sometimes they'll say you've driven the Marvel truck out of the land and off the freeway and you gotta come back now."

Nevertheless, Waititi confirms that Lucasfilm definitely runs a tighter ship, and it's likely we shouldn't expect some tonal changes from him when it comes to the episode that he's directing.

No release date has been set for Star Wars: The Mandalorian, but it's expected to debut on Disney's streaming service later this year.
