Suicide Squad May Have Had an Effect on Birds of Prey’s Box Office

Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) might have been enjoying positive reviews from fans and from critics, however, the DC film failed to meet industry expectations during its opening weekend.

The female team-up movie only managed to gather $33.3 million at the domestic box office, turning Birds of Prey into the lowest opening movie in the DCEU. There are many reasons why the film didn't do so well at the box office. There's Warner Brother's poor marketing strategy for Birds of Prey, there's the studio's decision to release the film in a weak month like February, and then there's the fact that the film's R-rating limited its viewership.

Now, Comic Book Review jots down another reason behind Birds of Prey's short box office flight – the film might have been affected by the failings of Suicide Squad.

Birds of Prey (And The Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) is supposed to take place directly after the events of David Ayer's failed comic book movie. While Margot Robbie's recent outing as Harley Quinn rights all of the wrongs of Suicide Squad, the film fails to connect to the DCEU.

While Harley is a riot even when she isn't connected to the Joker, it's possible that fans may be more eager to see the Gotham villain James Gunn's reboot sequel of Suicide Squad instead. Perhaps fans don't really care to see Quinn's adventures outside of the Suicide Squad franchise.

If that's true, then that's a total shame. Birds of Prey is hands down a riot that everyone should get to see.
