Suicide Squad Director Expresses Concern for DCU’s Current State

It’s natural for any franchise to receive backlash from its fandom because sometimes the vision that the creators have isn’t aligned with what the fans do want, but over the past few months, DCU has been under fire. From when James Gunn and Peter Safran took the positions as co-CEOs and implemented massive changes in the franchise to DC’s newly released movies failing at the box office. With that, the director of the first Suicide Squad movie, David Ayer, took to Twitter to share his sadness about the current state of DC.

“I’m a little sad today. Watching the tweets around DC. I had a really really shitty childhood. And I found solace in Batman. And Superman. Batman because he dealt with dark places and bad people and was a hurt kid like me. He overcame tragedy to make the world better,” wrote Ayer.

He continued, “And Superman was just good. No matter what he was going to be good and do good and not let the world turn his heart dark. I watched Justice League as a kid. And for that brief moment, I wasn’t alone. And I had friends I could trust. Maybe I’m naïve.”

The director added, “But that child in me still believes in Batman and Superman. And I hope there are some kids somewhere who are less lonely, less abandoned, less invisible because of the world of ALL filmmakers, Writers, animators, and illustrators working in the DC space both past and present.”

It's not brand new information that Ayer had his issues with DC Studios, since his version of Suicide Squad, dubbed the "Ayer Cut," was never released. The original version is claimed to have been tied to the Zack Snyder DCEU movies, but that was all said to be erased in the theatrical version.

Some fans speculate that the director’s online lamentation is also caused by Ben Affleck’s recent comment about Batman and Justice League, where he remarked that it was not the finest moment of his career. On his Twitter account, Ayer also retweeted an article about Affleck being their favorite actor, and he retweeted Vero’s post about today being Snyder Cut Day, as Zack Snyder’s Justice League was released on HBO Max two years ago.
